Leave Her Johnny in this context points to leaving the ship and life aboard it. This shanty has roots over 100 years old – It was first published in 1917 but used before this. It is said to be an emotional homage to working the last shift before docking and going separate ways. In the older text there is also a lot of complaining done in the song, about things such as rotten food and the ship owners.
