Fish In The Sea

Fish In The Sea is an old capstan worker song, with earliest text records of it from around 1910, but it’s believed to be a lot older. Here each sailor pushing the capstan would take turns singing a verse about a new fish – eel, shark, whale etc. In some cases a lead musician could be seen sitting or standing atop the capstan to sing or play an instrument for the other working sailors.
